Most Important Designs

Autothermik/Hydrothermik® Pistons
Autothermik/Hydrothermik® Pistons have cast-in steel struts between the skirt and pin bosses. The transition between the skirt and pin is slotted. These pistons combine smooth running with a long service life and are used primarily in passenger-car engines.

Autothermatik-/Hydrothermatik pistons
Autothermatik-/Hydrothermatik pistons also have cast-in steel struts. They are not slotted; however, and combine extremely smooth running with a high degree of strength for high-output engines (including Diesel engines, primarily in passenger-car and air-cooled truck Diesel engines).

Duotherm® Pistons
Duotherm® Pistons have a special shaped cast-in steel strut which provides nearly uniform control of thermal expansion over the entire length of the skirt combined with minimum fitting clearance. In terms of the loading capacity, these pistons rate between the Auto/Hydrothermik® and Auto-/Hydrothermatik® types.

Forged Pistons
Forged Pistons exhibit a particularly high degree of strength, thereby permitting smaller wall cross-sections and reduced weight. They are used mainly in high-output, fast-running engines as well as sports engines.

Groove Insert Pistons
Groove Insert Pistons have a ring groove insert made of austenitic special cast iron, which is firmly anchored in the piston base material by means of metal bonding. This insert counteracts the high degree of wear occurring above all in the top groove. This type of piston is used in Diesel engines, particularly in those with supercharging.

Pistons with Cooling Channel
Pistons with Cooling Channel are used wherever high operating temperatures occur. The intensive oil cooling counteracts the high temperatures in the piston crown and ring belt.

FERROTHERM® Pistons
On this piston design, the guiding and sealing functions are separated. Both parts, piston crown and piston skirt are connected movably to each other by the piston pin. The piston crown transmits the high peak pressures of advanced Diesel engines via pin and connecting rod to the crankshaft. The aluminum skirt supports the side forces. By respective design of the inner shape, the oil-cooling will be affected.

The FERROTHERM® piston design offers the highest stability and thermal strength, low wear resistance and good prerequisites for meeting future low exhaust emission values.
